Applicants seeking admission to professional doctorate candidature are typically required to hold a master’s degree with a Merit classification or an overall mark of at least 60% in a field relevant to the doctoral program. This degree should be conferred by a recognized UK or international university or higher education institution, or by the Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA).
International students aiming to undertake the DBA program in London over a four-year period must also meet an English language proficiency requirement. Candidates whose first language is not English should demonstrate proficiency at or above an average IELTS score (or its equivalent in any other approved test) of 6.0, with no individual component scoring lower than 5.5 in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
Part I
Part One comprises six mandatory taught modules, laying the groundwork for the independent practice-based research project in Part Two. Throughout the initial year, the modules are delivered at a rate of two per term.
Research Principles and Philosophy
Upon successful completion of this module, students should attain a comprehensive understanding of research design and methods in business, administration, and management studies. Additionally, they should develop an advanced and critical comprehension of current literature, critically assess the philosophical assumptions underpinning research in these fields, and identify the philosophical and epistemological presumptions influencing their approach to the DBA research project.
Visions for the Future: Theoretical Perspectives on Management
Completion of this module should enable students to critically analyze the philosophical foundations of contemporary management practices and the various contexts, perspectives, and paradigms in management. They should also critically examine and evaluate the views of major academic and management theorists, and apply foundational management theory to ongoing debates in management practice.
Critical Literature Review for Doctoral Research
Following this module, students should be adept at conducting an advanced and systematic search and review of literature in business, administration, and management studies. They should engage in comprehensive critiques and understanding of trends in literature analysis related to their research, critically participate in current debates in business, administration, and management theory, synthesize existing literature to draw conclusions about the current state of knowledge, and identify gaps to shape their own research aims and objectives.
Converting Research into Practice
Upon successful completion of this module, students should be able to create and interpret new knowledge through original research and advanced scholarship. They should acquire and understand a substantial body of knowledge at the forefront of business and management studies, conceptualize, design, and implement a research project, and communicate findings to academic practitioner audiences. This involves conducting a pilot study, gathering and analyzing original empirical data, and developing findings in the format of an academic journal article.
Quantitative Research Methods
Completing this module should empower students to critically assess the appropriate contexts for using quantitative research techniques, understand the philosophical underpinnings, strengths, and limitations of quantitative research, and develop a detailed understanding of applicable techniques for research. They should be able to select and implement quantitative analysis techniques, critically evaluate relevant research papers, assess contexts for quantitative/qualitative empirical evidence, and explore ways to further analyze data using software and analytical aids.
Advancing to the Doctoral Research Stage
Upon successful completion of this module, students should develop systematic acquisition and understanding of a substantial body of knowledge at the forefront of business and management studies. They should be capable of conceptualizing, designing, and undertaking a research project, writing and defending a detailed research proposal, and framing the creation and interpretation of new knowledge through original research and advanced scholarship, thereby advancing the forefront of business and management studies.
